Metabolism. What is it really? Everyone talks about it in conversations all over the place. Whether it is in person, or over the internet, it is a constant topic in all of our lives, and on all of our minds. We think we know what we are talking about, but more often times than not, we don't have a clue as to what it is. So let me explain.
Metabolism, anyone's metabolism is the life sustaining force of activity, a reaction in the cells, where food is converted to the energy your body needs to maintain itself. Or, where calories are converted to the energy we need to function. Or, more specifically the ratio of muscle versus fat.
I often hear people say, including myself. "Oh, I have a slow metabolism.", or "I can eat anything I want (not me specifically) because I burn what I eat." And while these are gross generalizations, they hold true on abasic scale. However, there are many factors that can affect your metabolism to either slow it down, or speed it up.
Below are the 7 Keys to an Ultra Metabolism:
- Manage your appetite
- Cool inflammation
- Subdue stress
- Minimize rusting
- Maximize energy production
- Boost thyroid activity
- Love your liver
To manage your appetite, does not mean to control it, or starve. It simply means to develop the right eating/nutritional plan with mostly lean quality protein at every meal, good complex carbohydrates at certain times of the day, and healthy fats. Eating 4-6 small meals a day will accomplish this.
In order to cool the inflammation in the body caused by many factors, such an environmental stress, stress in general, and poor nutrition, we should eat certain foods like lots of leafy greens, and avoid SUGAR and white refined products at all cost! This is one of the leading causes of inflammation in the body and should be discontinued immediately! Exercise is crucial, for building muscle and creating dopamine (the feel good hormone in the brain).
We all have stress in our lives that come in many different forms. Learning how to get it in check is extremely important for a healthy metabolism Stress related depression, and anxiety in any form slows down the body's ability to convert the food into the energy we need to get through our daily lives and maintain or lose weight and be healthy. Again, physical activity in any and all kinds is imperative, as is eating again, lots of great quality protein. to prevent rusting or oxidation in our bodies and keep the juices going,
Rusting or oxidation in our bodies and our cells is extremely dangerous to our healthy, and in lots of cases can cause free radicals which are the precursors to many types of cancers. On a more basic level, we can equate this to a can rusting from too much exposure to oxygen. I am not speaking of the oxygen we breath to live, but the oxygen that damages our cells, and slows us down. Again, minimizing this depends on our nutrition, exercise, supplements, stress levels, and our lifestyle in general.
To maximize your energy production, muscle mass is one of the keys to doing so. Muscle burns more than fat, and continues to burn and fuel your metabolism on a constant basis. Resistance training, plus key protein consumption at every small meal are the foundations for sustained energy.
The thyroid is the gland that produces hormones in the body. And depending on your levels, they can either speed up or slow down your metabolism and how you fuel the calories you consume. I am sure you have heard about hypo and hyper thyroidism which are diseases of mal-functioning thyroids. One severely speeds up the metabolism, and one dramatically slows it down. Normally this has to be regulated by medication or in some cases surgery to remove the thyroid gland altogether. In cases other than this, again, it boils down to maximum nutrition/food combining, the right supplements, and lots of great, varied physical exercise.
And last, but certainly not least is your liver, and it's function in relation to your metabolism. It is part of the digestive system, and has a dramatic affect on the amount of sugar produced in your system. And sugar, is very toxic to the body in synthetic form (white refined products, fructose, etc) and can bring you to extreme fatigue, disrupt your ability to convert food into energy, facilitate weight gain, and in some cases cause Type II diabetes (adult onset).
So the message is the same for the 7 above keys to building YOUR ultra metabolism. Recognize what they are, and build a strong, healthy nutritional, lifestyle plan and burn baby burn!
