I know you've watched the Biggest Loser and marveled at how fast the contestants lose weight. So let's talk about something simple today: Is rapid fast weight loss a healthy, long term solution?
In the short term, losing weight really fast is without a doubt possible. And, in all honesty, I don't think it's going to kill you. In the case of The Biggest Loser, I think it's probably good... many of the contestants are so over weight that the benefits simply getting down to a remotely healthy weight far outweigh the health risks of doing it so fast.
However, losing weight at a rate of more than about 2 pounds a week is simply not sustainable in the long run.
For one thing, it takes approximately a 3500 calorie deficit to lose one pound - that is, you must take in 3500 calories less than you consume to lose one pound of fat. So losing a pound a week would require a 500 calorie per day deficit (500x7=3500), and losing two pounds a week would require a 1000 calorie per day deficit (1000x7=7000).
So, it's really hard to get into more than a 1000 calorie per day deficit. If your maintenance calorie level is 5000, it might not be so hard. But if you're like the average 150 pound woman and only burning 1500 calories a day, it's pretty tough.
Moral of the story is that if you're losing more than two pounds a week, it's likely coming from something other than fat - like water. So as a fitness pro, I don't recommend it. Stick with a sound diet and workout routine, get yourself into the proper mindset, and you'll lose a steady and sustainable 1-2 pounds per week of body fat - and keep it off for good.
