PC to TV Troubleshooting Tips

Nothing sucks more than waiting in line at midnight for that game you've been waiting endless months for, only to find out when you get home that your TV screen goes black when you start the game. Like many folks out there, you thought it would be a great idea to use your big screen TV as a computer monitor. It's not a bad idea at all, but can have some technical difficulties that go along with it.
So now it's time to understand what could cause this problem. There are many factors involved when your TV won't display your computer screen properly. Let's have a look at these factors and maybe narrow it down a bit.
The first thing you need to do is verify the cable you're using to connect from your computer to your TV. These could be the basic VGA (blue connector), DVI (white connector usually), mini HDMI cable, or the original HDMI cable which is growing more common these days. Verify that you are using the proper cable and we're good to go on that front. Keep in mind that although rare, cables can go bad. It's always good to swap out the cable for a known good one as physical connection is the first line of troubleshooting.
The second thing you need to verify is the native resolution of your TV screen. Most TV's these days run at "something" x 720 or 1080. Take a look at the native resolution of your TV and write that down. It's important to remember that your source device, whether that is a computer or any other device, needs to be set at the same resolution as your TV screen.
The third is to ensure your PC screen resolution is set to the native resolution of your monitor. Even though your computer can push out different resolutions than your TV advertises, it's not a safe bet and can interfere with your troubleshooting efforts.
The next step is a reach, but could be causing your problem. You may have a mount that is pinching cables. This could be degrading your signal or taking your cable down completely. Browse for quality TV wall mount reviews if that ends up being a solution.
The last and probably most important thing to do is unconnected your PC from the TV and plug it into a monitor. Log into your new video game and browse the video settings. Ensure your video game resolution is set to the native resolution of your TV and you should be set to continue you never-ending lifetime of gaming.
